WhatsApp number banned or restricted — recovery steps
A restriction is temporary and quality-linked; a ban disables the account. This guide from MaxMySales (an official Meta Tech Provider) explains exactly how to appeal, typical recovery timelines, and how to keep it from happening again.
Symptom
You see "This account can't use WhatsApp" (ban), a countdown timer (temporary ban, usually 8–24 hours), or your API number suddenly cannot send template messages / has a slashed messaging limit (restriction). Restrictions and bans are different problems with different fixes.
Most common causes
- Unofficial tools: bulk senders, modified apps (GB WhatsApp etc.) or scripts that automate the regular WhatsApp / WhatsApp Business app. Meta detects the automation patterns, not just volume.
- Messaging without consent: high block/report rates from recipients who never opted in — the single strongest ban signal.
- Bulk behaviour on the free app: sending large volumes of similar messages from the WhatsApp Business app, which is designed for small-scale conversation, not campaigns.
- Policy-violating content: restricted goods/services under the WhatsApp Commerce Policy, or repeated quality violations that escalate from restriction to ban.
Exact fix steps
- Temporary ban (countdown visible): wait it out, and stop the behaviour that caused it — especially any unofficial tool. Sending again the same way converts temporary into permanent.
- Permanent ban (app): tap Request a review on the ban screen or contact WhatsApp support; state your business use, consent process and what changed. Reviews typically take 24–48 hours.
- API number ban/restriction: open Meta Business Help Center → contact support, or have your BSP escalate through partner channels (this is usually faster). Provide opt-in evidence and remediation steps taken.
- Restriction (quality-linked): check the quality rating and any violation notice in WhatsApp Manager, pause the offending campaigns, and let the rating recover — limits are re-evaluated continuously (see our quality-rating guide).
- If recovery fails and you must move, migrate to the official API with a clean consent flow rather than repeating the app-based pattern on a new SIM.
Prevention
Use the official WhatsApp Business API for anything at campaign scale, collect explicit opt-ins and honour STOP instantly, warm up new numbers gradually, keep marketing frequency reasonable per user, and watch block rates in WhatsApp Manager weekly. Since October 2025 messaging limits are evaluated at the Business-Portfolio level, so one bad number's behaviour can affect your whole portfolio — govern all numbers under one policy.
Ban & recovery FAQs
How do I appeal a banned WhatsApp Business number?
In the WhatsApp Business app, tap "Request a review" on the ban screen. For API numbers, appeal through Meta Business Support (Business Help Center) or ask your Business Solution Provider to escalate. Appeals are typically reviewed within 24–48 hours.
What is the difference between a restriction and a ban?
A restriction temporarily limits messaging volume or blocks certain template categories and is reversible by improving quality. A ban disables the account; temporary bans show a countdown (usually 8–24 hours), while permanent bans require a successful appeal to recover.
Can I get banned for using bulk-sender tools?
Yes. Unofficial automation tools and modified WhatsApp apps are one of the most common ban causes. Bulk messaging is only safe on the official WhatsApp Business API through a registered BSP, with opted-in recipients and approved templates.
Will a new SIM or number fix a ban?
Starting over on a new number loses your chat history, green-tick eligibility progress and quality history, and repeating the same sending behaviour usually leads to a repeat ban. Fix the root cause — consent, content and volume — before re-launching.
